00:05
Hey friends today I am sharing my top grocery shopping tips.
00:09
Markets are a great place to go to get what you need but it is important to remember that
00:13
they are designed to get you to purchase food.
00:17
They want you to eat more.
00:18
Healthy choices are easy to make though if you know where to go.
00:22
Be sure to also check for your local farmers market because they are a great place to go
00:26
for healthy wholesome foods.
00:28
Number one, plan it.
00:31
Plan your meals for the week and create a list to follow.
00:34
It will save you time in the long run, keeping you from going to the store again to get missing
00:39
ingredients.
00:40
Next up, coupon.
00:42
Check for coupons in your weekly grocery store ads.
00:45
Remember to only use the coupons for items that you need.
00:49
If you end up using coupons on items you don’t need, you’re not really saving any money.
00:53
Shop the perimeter of the store.
00:55
This is my favorite grocery store tip.
00:58
Generally the healthiest options, your whole foods such as meats, dairy and produce are
01:04
placed around the outside of the store.
01:07
The inside aisles have your processed and packaged foods which are generally worse for
01:12
you and more expensive.
01:14
Use your list and only go to the inner aisles for those items that you had planned to purchase.
01:19
Canned and frozen vegetables are also an exception to the rule, they are usually on the inside
01:24
aisles but they are also just as nutritious as fresh produce and a little bit cheaper.
01:30
Go organic when you can.
01:32
Remember to check out the clean 15 and dirty dozen plus lists for advice on when it is
01:38
worth it to purchase organic produce if you are shopping on a budget.
01:42
When it comes to packaged foods, remember that having the words organic or natural slapped
01:47
on there, does not necessarily make it a healthy choice.
01:51
Organic cookies are still cookies.
01:53
Read labels.
01:55
Shorter ingredients list generally mean cleaner choices.
01:59
Breads and a lot of other packaged foods are notorious for making health claims.
02:03
Just because it sounds healthy doesn’t mean it is.
02:06
The only way to really know is by reading that nutrition label.
02:09
Be sure to check out my how to choose bread episode to learn more.
02:13
Also take care with condiments, dressings and jams as many of them have added sugar
02:18
that just isn’t necessary, so always read the label.
02:20
And finally, this may be more applicable to some of you than others, but avoid the cereal
02:25
aisle.
02:26
It doesn’t matter if it is organic or not, even cereals that are claiming to be healthy,
02:31
usually still aren’t the best breakfast choice.
02:33
If you must find yourself looking in the cereal aisle, look for an option that has little
02:38
to no sugar and a very short ingredients list and I promise that is very hard to find, so
02:43
if you find one comment below and let me know what it is.
02:46
Remember also that granola can be tricky, it can be healthy but a lot of the store bought
02:50
brands are loaded with added sugar.
02:53
So if you are unsure of which brands to buy, it is always a safe bet to make your own.
02:58
Thanks so much for watching, I hope that some of these tips will help you with your grocery
03:01
shopping.
03:02
And remember, there is a PDF that you can download by clicking here in the description
03:07
box, that will give you all of these tips, then you can print it out and keep it or save
03:11
it for later so that you can remember how to shop well.
